Dr. Simard completed his undergraduate degree from St. Anselm’s College where he graduated with his undergraduate degree in Chemistry with a Bachelor of Arts in 1972. He then graduated with with his Medical Degree from the Creighton University School of Medicine in 1980, giving him over three decades of experience in his field. Furthering his education he graduated with his PhD in Neuroscience with the same institute. After obtaining his Medical Degree he completed completed his Biophysics residency with the Universitat des Saarlandes and his Neurosurgery fellowship with the University of Florida.

Dr. Simard is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. To stay up to date in his field he remains a professional member of the University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, Inc. He currently practices with the University of Maryland Medical System, where he currently is a professor of neurosurgery. He is Chief of Neurosurgery at the Baltimore VA Hospital and actively manages a large NIH-funded laboratory with over 15 scientists. He holds an expertise in vascular neurosurgery, which includes the surgery and management of patients with stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage and other vascular lesions of the brain. Dr. Simard is an experienced investigative scientist who is responsible for the original discovery of the Sur1-Trpm4 channel (previously, the Sur1-regulated NCCa-ATP channel) and for initiating the work showing involvement of the channel in acute diseases of the CNS.

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of of patients with injury to, or diseases/disorders of the brain, spinal cord and spinal column, and peripheral nerves within all parts of the body. The specialty of neurosurgical care includes both adult and pediatric patients. Dependent upon the nature of the injury or disease a neurological surgeon may provide surgical and/or non-surgical care.
