He received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed both his internship and residency at Letterman Army Medical Center, Presidio, of San Francisco, California.
Thereafter, he completed a fellowship in sports medicine at Hughston Orthopedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. He served as the Chief of Orthopedics at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point for seven years and during that time developed and directed the Army Sports Medicine fellowship.
Subsequent to his education, Dr. Ryan attained board certification in orthopedic surgery through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.
As a result of his professional competence, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (FAAOS) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
