Dr. Cappel is a board-certified pathologist with Williamsport Pathology Associates, a private pathology practice based at UPMC Williamsport in Pennsylvania. “I enjoy the medium-sized hospital setting. Originally established in 1970, Williamsport Pathology Associates is a 7-person practice providing anatomic and clinical pathology services to much of North Central Pennsylvania. The group covers five different hospitals within the UPMC network as well as many local physician offices. The practice is based out of UPMC Williamsport, an acute care hospital operating 224 licensed beds and 22 bassinets.
After earning her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine, Dr. Cappel went on to complete her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology and fellowship in hematopathology at the University of Rochester.
Attributing her success to having very supportive mentors and receiving support from her family, she remains a member of numerous professional organizations, including the College of American Pathologists, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Lycoming County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Association of Pathologists, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Excelling in her profession, Dr. Cappel is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology & hematology by the American Board of Pathology (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to promote the health of the public and advance the practice and science of pathology by establishing voluntary certification standards and assessing the qualifications of those seeking to practice the specialty of pathology.
Pathology is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues, bodily fluids, and in some cases, the whole body. Pathologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and management of diseases by laboratory methods.
On a more personal note, Dr. Cappel is married. She and her husband, Nick, have four children: Ben, Teddy, Charlotte, and Julian. They have two dogs, a hamster, and a fish. The family enjoys hiking the myriad trails in the mountains of Pennsylvania and trying out new board games when it is too cold to be outside.
