A seasoned hand surgeon, Dr. Bennett is the Vice President of the Fondren Orthopedic Group in Houston, Texas.
Academically, he began his academic journey at the University of Oklahoma, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1965. He then pursued his medical education at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, obtaining his medical degree in 1969, and completed a straight surgical internship at Baylor University School of Medicine and Affiliated Hospitals.
Continuing his specialization, Dr. Bennett underwent rigorous residencies in general surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals from 1970 to 1971, and orthopedic surgery at Upstate Medical Center at Syracuse from 1971 to 1974.
To further refine his expertise in hand surgery, he pursued a fellowship in surgery of the hand under the renowned Dr. Harold Kleinert at the University of Louisville School of Medicine from January 1974 to January 1975. He also undertook a traveling fellowship under his mentorship at the Hand Surgery Centers of Europe. Later, he obtained an MBA from the University of Houston in 1998.
Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in surgery of the hand and orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.
Continuously advancing his efforts, Dr. Bennett is an active member of several prestigious organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Orthopedic Association, the American Orthopedic Association, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the Houston Orthopedic Society, the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand, the Peruvian Orthopedic and Traumatology Society, the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Orthopaedic Association, and the Western Orthopedic Association, among others.
With a passion for teaching, he has held numerous faculty appointments throughout his career, including his current position as Clinical Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine since 2000. He has also served as Chief of Staff at Texas Orthopedic Hospital since March 1995, and Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Texas – Houston since March 1998.
Additionally, Dr. Bennett’s contributions to medical education include serving as the Director of Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship and the Director of the Hand Surgery Section in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dedicated to patient care, he has served as a Senior Attending in Orthopedic Surgery at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, since February 1987. He also holds the position of Chief of the Hand Surgery Service at Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, where he has been instrumental in providing specialized care for children in need.
Throughout his career, Dr. Bennett has been recognized for his expertise and leadership. He has served as a consultant in hand surgery and orthopedics for various professional sports teams, including the Houston Oilers, Houston Astros, and Houston Rockets. His involvement in sports medicine highlights his commitment to helping athletes recover from hand and upper extremity injuries.
