James Gill, MS, AGACNP-BC, CCRN Nurse Practitioner with Pulmonary & Critical Care of the Tri-Cities

Get to know Nurse Practitioner James Gill, who serves patients in Hopewell and Petersburg, Virginia.

Having been in practice for nearly 10 years, James is a nurse practitioner who is currently serving patients at Pulmonary & Critical Care of the Tri-Cities in Virginia. He is affiliated with two area hospitals, including John Randolph Medical Center and Southside Regional Medical Center.

James is board-certified as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP). AGACNPs are Nurse Practitioners who obtain training to acquire expertise in caring for the adult and geriatric population in the acute care setting such as hospital Intensive Care Units as well as chronic care management in the office setting. James also specializes in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM). PCCM is committed to caring for critically ill patients and patients with lung disease.

James started on the floor as a telemetry nurse and moved on to ICU. Wanting to continue to grow as a professional, he went to a level two trauma center and worked in the Medical-Surgical Trauma ICU and Cardiovascular ICU before returning to school for his NP degree.

James earned his Associate’s degree from ECPI University in 2010, followed by his bachelor’s degree from Chamberlain University College of Nursing in 2014. He then went on to receive his Master’s degree in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care from Georgetown University in 2018.

James is certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and he is also a Certified Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN). CCRN certification is a board certification granted by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Certification Corporation. It validates that a registered nurse has achieved a level of expertise in nursing necessary to care for patients in the acute care and/or critical care setting.

In order to stay up to date in his field, James maintains professional memberships with the Virginia Nurses Association, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the American Nurses Association, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

James initially wanted to become a dentist. However, when he was a junior in high school, his friend was in a car accident and unfortunately passed away. When James noticed the exceptional care the nurses gave his friend, he changed his path and entered into the field of medicine.

James attributes his success to hard work and dedication, along with a hunger for knowledge, and many wonderful mentors and influences along the way.

When asked what motivates him at the start of each day, James answered “knowing I am helping someone when they are their most vulnerable state.” He strives to treat his patients like family and instill healthier habits in them. He also focuses on healing them overall with lifestyle modifications,  rather than just masking symptoms and providing a temporary solution.

A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) classified as a mid-level practitioner. A NP, like James, is trained to assess patient needs, order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests, diagnose illness and disease, prescribe medication, as well as formulate treatment plans.

James is married and has two children. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children and also hobbies such as photography and his car.
