Leading Healthcare Innovator Takes Charge of Clinical Operations Across Five Major Hospitals
Dr. Mazo is a distinguished occupational physician currently serving as the Regional Executive Director for Occupational Medicine at Trinity Health Of New England (THOfNE) in Connecticut. With a robust background in medicine, leadership, and workman’s compensation law, he plays a pivotal role in promoting a culture centered on safety and wellness to avoid injuries and enhance employees’ occupational experiences at the organization’s five principal hospitals as well as on the national level for Trinity Health. In his position, Dr. Mazo works in tandem with various hospital leadership teams and specialized service lines, including the legal department, to implement best practices in occupational health and safety, provide clinical leadership for system occupational health matters, and oversight of occupational claims for workers’ compensation.
As Medical Director and clinician for Occupational Medicine at St. Francis Hospital for many years, Dr. Mazo not only focused on safety and follow-up for hospital colleagues but also employees of contracted outside companies with a special interest in career and volunteer firefighters for several fire departments in the Greater Hartford area and beyond.
During the Covid-19 Pandemic, Dr. Mazo served in the Incident Command Center for THOfNE and his distinguished service during this public health emergency was recognized by Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont with a special letter of commendation reading in part, “I want to personally thank you for your dedication to the State of Connecticut throughout this pandemic. There have been times over the past year where my team needed assistance when it came to testing or guidance, and you were there to provide it on a moment’s notice.” Dr. Mazo was also recognized with the St. Francis Hospital Chair of Medicine’s Challenge Coin for outstanding service to the organization and community during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Some of Dr. Mazo’s other community involvement has included serving on the CT Hospital Association’s (CHA) Covid-19 Task Force and the Board of Directors for the New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (NECOM) for five years.
Dr. Mazo’s academic journey is impressive; he obtained his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1993, followed by a residency in General Surgery at The University of Connecticut School of Medicine, which he completed in 1998. He further specialized with a fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Pennsylvania State University in 2000 and concluded his education at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, finishing a residency in Occupational and Environmental Medicine in 2007.
Since 2011, Dr. Mazo has held board certifications in both occupational medicine and preventive medicine from the American Board of Preventive Medicine. His extensive experience in surgical disciplines combined with his expertise in occupational health uniquely equips him to lead Trinity Health Of New England in its quest to deliver comprehensive, integrated healthcare solutions that meet the diverse needs of the communities it serves.
