James T. Turlington, MD, BRIG GEN USAF: A Legacy of Healing and Service

Dr. James T. Turlington is a distinguished board certified urologist at the Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System in Temple, Texas. With a remarkable career spanning decades, he combines his extensive medical expertise with a deep commitment to serving veterans.

Dr. Turlington began his academic journey at Baylor University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology in 1966. He continued his education at Baylor College of Medicine, obtaining his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1970. Dr. Turlington completed a surgery internship at Wilford Hall Medical Center in 1971, where he also attended the Aerospace Medicine Primary Course at Brooks AFB. His dedication to the field culminated with a urology residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center, completed in 1979.

In addition to his medical training, Dr. Turlington has a notable military career. He served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a surgeon until 1981 and was recalled to active duty in January 1991 to lead the 11th Contingency Hospital during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm as Commander. 

His leadership and service have earned him numerous prestigious awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with an oak leaf cluster, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He has also been honored with the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and the National Defense Service Medal. Additionally, he has earned the Air Force Longevity Service Award with four oak leaf clusters and the Air Force Training Ribbon.

Dr. Turlington’s extensive experience and dedication to patient care are evident in his ongoing commitment to the practice of medicine and mentorship of younger urologists. He believes in the importance of continuing to serve the community after retirement from military service.

“Those of us [urologists] who have become general officers have all gone back to practice,” Turlington notes. “We want to practice medicine after we retire from the military because we like what we do. In fact, I can’t imagine not being a doctor; the real satisfaction comes from taking care of those people” expresses Dr. Turlington.
