Dr. Bell is a comprehensive ophthalmologist, specializing in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. He handles all medical and surgical diseases of the eye, including glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, age related macular degeneration, and other common eyelid disorders. He also performs standard and custom cataract surgery, laser surgery, anterior segment surgery, as well as refractive surgical procedures, including LASIK and PRK.

Dr. Bell is affiliated with Cincinnati Eye Institute, located in Batavia, Ohio. For more than 70 years, Cincinnati Eye Institute has been serving the community with first class eye care. The Institute treats more complex and more routine conditions than any other facility or hospital. Their goal is “to pave the way for tomorrow’s eye care and bring it to our patients today.”

Dr. Bell was born and raised in Cincinnati, and attended Anderson High School. In 1996, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Denison University, graduating in three years time. With a strong interest in research, he earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2001 from Wesleyan University in Connecticut while working to combat bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Following a short post-doctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Bell returned to Cincinnati and earned his medical degree in 2005 from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He did an internship in Internal Medicine at the University Hospital, and completed his residency at the same Hospital, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. He then spent 3 months doing a mini-fellowship in Refractive Surgery in New York with Drs. Eric Donnenfeld and Jack Dodick.

Dr. Bell has published many original scientific articles in several basic and clinical science journals. His topics range from the enzymology of bacterial resistance to antibiotics to cardiac pathophysiology during open heart surgery and the ocular molecular genetics of retinal degenerative disease. As a resident, he co-authored a book chapter on Iris Reconstruction Surgery for the leading textbook in corneal, refractive, and anterior segment surgery with Dr. Michael Snyder at Cincinnati Eye Institute.

Dr. Bell is a Volunteer Faculty of Ophthalmology with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He teaches ophthalmology residents how to perform cataract surgery at the VA Medical Center and University-Holmes Hospital. Furthermore, he is an Ocular Trauma Surgeon for the University Hospital Level I Trauma Center, where he teaches residents how to perform ocular reconstruction after devastating ocular injuries.

Dr. Bell is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, the Ohio Ophthalmological Society, the Cincinnati Society of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, and the American Society of Ocular Trauma.

Recently, Dr. Bell was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, often listed as “FACS”, is a post-nominal title used to indicate that the surgeon’s education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation, and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by said College.

Dr. Bell has been honored as one of Cincinnati’s Top Doctors for 2010, 2012 and 2013.
