Jeanine J. Luke, RN, BScN, MScN, Registered Nurse
Get to know Registered Nurse, Jeanine J. Luke, who serves patients in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Jeanine is a registered nurse who has been in practice for over 32 years. Her areas of expertise include wound care, intravenous therapy, health assessment, triage, and mentoring.
Jeanine is currently employed by Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology, which is a multiple-campus public college located in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada. Her role is teaching technical nursing skills to first year nursing students in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program at the King Campus site. Her other responsibilities as a Clinical Instructor include ensuring that students comply with standards of nursing practice by performing formative and summative evaluation, thereby enhancing growth and development.
From 1988 through 2008, Jeanine worked in the Emergency Department of North York General Hospital. From 2008 until 2009, she worked part-time in the Emergency Department of Scarborough Grace Hospital.
Jeanine’s last employment as a registered nurse was in 2012. She worked part-time within the emergency department of a SRT nursing agency in Canada. Through this experience, she gained practical skills, knowledge, and expertise in the nursing field.
Jeanine graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree from Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada in 1998. There, she also earned a certificate in Leadership and Management for Nurses. In 2005, she graduated from D’Youville College in Buffalo with a Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) degree in Community Health Nursing. After graduation, she began her teaching role as a Clinical Instructor.
Jeanine holds certifications in ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and BLS (Basic Life Support – not intended for postnominal use).
Jeanine is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario.
Jeanine’s research interest includes the perception of nurses toward a sickle cell patient seeking medical intervention during a crisis through the emergency department. If given the opportunity, she would focus on this area. The only research paper she has completed is her thesis on sickle cell crisis and it can be found at the Michigan and D’Youville College libraries.
Jeanine was inspired by her grandfather at an earlier age to become a nurse. From this inspiration, she focused on sciences in school in order to learn about the anatomy and physiology of the human body. In 1970, she immigrated to Canada and her dream of becoming a nurse began.
Jeanine stated that she strived to make a difference in the lives of her patients by developing therapeutic relationships with them. And seeing as how she had the opportunity to listen to their immediate health or basic needs for over 32 years, she now strives to pass on her knowledge to others through teaching.
A registered nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to their primary role of treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, as well as assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.
Jeanine considers herself to be a spiritual individual. When asked what motivates her at the start of each day, she answered, “Through the lens of the glass, God gave me the power through prayer to start a new day counting on his provision in my life. His purpose for me is unremarkable.”
Jeanine attributes her success to ongoing learning and curiosity of knowing more and more. For years, she remained focused on her education for the purpose of enhancing her growth and development. Now, she is sharing the knowledge she has gained over the years with others.
In her spare time, Jeanine enjoys exercising and reading. She is also a Prayer Line volunteer.
