He is also affiliated with Fairfax Surgery Center, Harborside Surgery Center, Virginia Hospital Center, and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital.

With a deep level of concern and empathy for his patients, Dr. Lovallo states, “One of the things that I am proudest of is the level of personal concern for our patients. I think that has to be foremost in a physician’s mind.”

For more than seventy five years, the physicians of The Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic have practiced pioneering techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic conditions. Today, they provide leadership in minimally invasive surgery, joint replacement, arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine, as well as complete upper extremity and spine care. Education, prevention, and rehabilitation are combined in a personalized program that maximizes each patient’s potential for a full recovery and a return to function. Through an extended program of follow-up, doctors fulfill their commitment to assuring the best possible outcomes.

A Connecticut native, Dr. Lovallo received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He then completed his residency at the University of Connecticut, and his fellowship in hand surgery at Harvard Medical School. He was Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut before moving to the Washington, D.C. area.

Dedicated to excellence, the doctor is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and surgery of the hand by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

A founding member of the Mid-Atlantic Shoulder and Elbow Society, Dr. Lovallo now shares his expertise with other surgeons. He has created an educational video on total shoulder replacement and travels both nationally and internationally teaching modern shoulder replacement techniques. He is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, a consultant for DePuy medical (the leading total shoulder joint replacement company in the US), and has been published in DeLee and Drez’s Orthopaedic Sports Medicine textbook as well as in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Most recently, he was the senior author on a publication in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery entitled, “Intraoperative Intra-Articular Injection of Gentamicin:  Will it decrease the risk of infection in total shoulder arthroplasty?” The research for the publication spanned over a six year timeframe and consisted of 507 total shoulder arthroplasty procedures, all of which were performed by Dr. Lovallo. In the fall of 2014, Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital adopted the infection prevention protocol discussed in the paper.

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

An authority in his field, Dr. Lovallo was named a 2013 Washington Post Super Doctor by his peers and a Washingtonian Magazine 2009 Top Doctor.
