Get to know Gastroenterologist Dr. Jennifer M. Harley, who serves patients in New York City, New York.

Dr. Harley is the Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Diseases & the Director of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Programs at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan in New York City, New York. Her medical portfolio includes saving and improving lives,  leading the hospital’s gastrointestinal endoscopy service, and all aspects of the division, as well as shaping future generations of gastroenterologists.

“Compassion is the core of everything we do. In every patient we should see ourselves: What would we want as a patient? How would we want to be treated? No patient should have to suffer from a life-altering disease, especially preventable ones. I have the opportunity to treat the patient as a whole, providing not just diagnostic and therapeutic options but also holistic approaches” as stated by the doctor.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan is a full-service community hospital that provides state-of-the-art care and leading-edge technology in a modern environment. The staff provides culturally-sensitive care to patients from all five New York City boroughs in a welcoming and hospitable setting, emphasizing primary care medicine, and utilizing the latest advances in medical science. Close patient supervision by a specially trained multidisciplinary team of health professionals helps ensure that patients receive the best, most effective care possible.

At a young age, Dr. Harley’s life was saved by a gastroenterologist, sparking her desire to “pay it forward and one day be able to make a positive impact on a person’s life.” Later, as an undergraduate at The Ohio State University, she was inspired by a speech by then-U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher on health care reform and advocacy. That turning point launched her “career mission” to provide exceptional medical care to the underserved and eliminate health care disparities.

In 2001, she earned her medical degree from the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. She then went on to complete her residency in internal medicine and her fellowship in gastroenterology at New York Medical College-Westchester Medical Center. Thereafter, she was recruited to join the Metropolitan’s Department of Medicine as a gastroenterologist.

Over the years, Dr. Harley has participated in numerous gastroenterology-related healthcare initiatives, including a health fair at Metropolitan in March 2019 to promote colon cancer awareness. She is board-certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. A gastroenterologist is a physician who has extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, colon, liver, pancreas, and biliary system.
