Jenny Teresa Bencardino, MD, a Musculoskeletal Radiologist with Penn Medicine

Get to know Radiologist Dr. Jenny Teresa Bencardino, who serves patients in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

An exceptional radiologist, Dr. Bencardino is the Chief of Musculoskeletal Imaging at Penn Medicine University City, and serves as a Professor of Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She is also a Faculty Advisor member of the Radiology Inclusion Diversity Equity (RIDE) committee and one of the Diversity Search Advisor (DSA) for Penn Radiology.

Penn Musculoskeletal Imaging is primarily located at Penn Medicine University City (PMUC), an advanced treatment and outpatient facility that brings a multitude of specialties together, all under one roof. PMUC strives to provide seamless, integrated care to patients. It includes 200,000 square feet of exam rooms, outpatient operating rooms for same-day surgeries, as well as an outpatient radiology center. In addition, Dr. Bencardino maintains hospital privileges at the Chester County Hospital, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Pennsylvania Hospital.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Bencardino earned her medical degree and diagnostic radiology certification at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia in 1991 and 1996, respectively. After relocating to the United States, she completed her residency training in diagnostic radiology at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and her fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at the NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, formerly known as Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD). 

Subsequent to her education, Dr. Bencardino attained board certification in diagnostic radiology through the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in 2000. The ABR is a not-for-profit physician-led organization that oversees the certification and ongoing professional development of specialists in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

On a professional level, Dr. Bencardino is an active member of the American College of Radiology (ACR), the ACR Commission for Women and Diversity, the American Board of Radiology DR Certifying MSK Committee, the International Skeletal Society, the Society of Skeletal Radiology, the Pennsylvania Radiological Society, the Radiological Society of North America, and the American Roentgen Ray Society. 

Dr. Bencardino is a world renowned expert in Musculoskeletal Radiology, a field of medicine that uses both non-invasive and interventional imaging techniques to diagnose and treat disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system including bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Dr. Bencardino’s practice uses state-of-the-art equipment and the best technologists in Philadelphia to perform digital radiography, ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and bone densitometry (DEXA) in our patients in order to expedite their accurate diagnosis and treatment. Her referral base includes orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, sports medicine, rheumatology, oncology, endocrinology, family medicine, internal medicine, geriatrics and primary care professionals. 

Dr. Bencardino has served as Guest Editor for MRI Clinics of North America (2012) and Seminars in Musculoskeletal Imaging (2013,2022) and is the Section Editor of “Imaging of the Knee” in Insall & Scott Surgery of the Knee, 6th edition (2015). Until recently, she was a member of the Musculoskeletal Radiology Editorial Committee for the American Journal of Roentgenology. Dr. Bencardino received the “Reviewer of Distinction” award from Skeletal Radiology in 2010 and 2011 and the Editor’s Recognition Award with Distinction from Radiology in 2014.

Dr. Bencardino is the recipient of the 2013 President’s Medal of the International Skeletal Society. Education and mentorship have been a major focus of Dr. Bencardino’s career, as reflected in her receipt of the 2014 RSNA Honored Educator award. Her commitment to professional excellence in the field of Radiology was recognized with a Who’s Who lifetime achievement award.

In the public service realm, Dr. Bencardino is the founder of Free Spirit Tennis & Soccer, a volunteer group that brings sports instruction to the Juvenile Detention Center in Westbury, New York.
