Jessica Robles, a Nursing Student at California State University Channel Islands

Get to know Nursing Student, Jessica Robles, who lives in Ventura, California.

Ventura born and raised, Jessica is a nursing student who is currently enrolled at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) in Camarillo, California. She is studying to earn her nursing degree.

Established in 2002, CSUCI is a four-year, public university and the youngest of 23 campuses in the CSU family. RegisteredNursing.org has ranked CSUCI’s Nursing program as the 8th best program in the state of California out of 126 nursing schools by analyzing current and historical pass rates of students who take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). CSUCI’s Nursing program NCLEX pass rate is frequently 100% or in the high 90th percentile for each graduating class.

Jessica has known that she wanted to become a nurse ever since she was seven years old. “I would get those little plastic doctor’s kits and pretend I was giving my family injections,” she stated. However, much of her inspiration came from her grandmother, who was not formally trained as a nurse, but had to be taught basic nursing skills on the job in the small Zacatecas, Mexico village where she grew up.

To further advance her efforts, Jessica remains a member of the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). Founded in 1952, NSNA is a nonprofit organization for students enrolled in associate, baccalaureate, diploma, and generic graduate nursing programs. Its mission is to mentor students preparing for initial licensure as registered nurses, and to convey the standards, ethics, and skills that students will need as responsible and accountable leaders and members of the profession.

The title ‘nursing student’ usually applies to students enrolled in a registered nurse or practical nurse program. A nursing student can be enrolled in a program that leads to a diploma, an associate degree or a Bachelor of Science in nursing. After the nursing student becomes a registered nurse, he or she is required to participate in continuing education to retain their licensing and registration.

Being the oldest of four sisters, Jessica is the first in her generation to attend college. She also considers herself a political activist, willing to spend what little free time she has manning phone banks and volunteering for candidates she believes will further the cause of social justice and the Latinx community.
