Anesthesiologist & Surgical Intensivist with NYU Langone Health

Dr. Joanna Aiken is a board-certified anesthesiologist who cares for adult and pediatric patients in the operating rooms and intensive care units at NYU Langone Health- ranked the #1 hospital in new york, and #3 nationally by the US World & News Report. 

Dr. Aiken is a clinical assistant professor teaching medical students, residents, and fellows affiliated with New York University Grossman School of Medicine. She lectures at both national, and international conferences in: bioethics, surgical critical care, consent, guardianship, and quality improvement. Indeed, most recently, Dr. Aiken lectured to the united nations educational, scientific, & cultural organization (UNESCO) in bioethics and, additionally, presented at the 2022 American Society of Anesthesiologists in New Orleans.  

Dr. Aiken is passionate about the pursuit of truth, and she works to cultivate excellence through the art of clinical practice and physician education at NYU Langone. She focuses on progress, finding solutions, active listening, and is steadfast in her dedication to putting the patient first. 

Dr. Aiken graduated from Harvard University’s critical care fellowship program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2020. Alongside mentors and colleagues, Dr. Aiken faced the covid-19 pandemic during her fellowship. Dr. Aiken received Brigham and Women’s “award in excellence for outstanding performance” for her leadership efforts amidst the pandemic. She completed her residency in her home town of Buffalo, NY through the state university of new york- university at buffalo under the purview of internationally renowned physician, Dr. Mark Lema. 

She is skilled at the following procedures: endotracheal intubation, percutaneous tracheostomy, cricothyrotomy, neuraxial procedures, thoracic and lumbar epidural placement, spinal anesthetic placement, spinal taps, peripheral nerve blocks (i.e. axillary, interscalene, femoral nerve blocks for primary anesthetic and/or pain intervention), diagnostic and therapeutic thoracentesis and abdominal paracentesis, placement of central lines, arterial lines, and intravenous lines, cardiac arrest management after open chest surgery (i.e. open chest management, central ecmo cannulation, and direct cardiac defibrillation), initiation of massive transfusion protocol for all blood products in the case of life threatening hemorrhage and/or trauma, basic transthoracic echocardiography, abdominal ultrasound, needle decompression thoracostomy, and chest tube placement.
