Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. John A. Campagna, who serves patients in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Campagna is a board-certified and fellowship-trained ophthalmologist who specializes in the treatment of glaucoma and cataracts. Having performed more than 10,000 intraocular surgeries and lasers, he is a part of the team at Ophthalmology Associates of San Antonio in Texas, which he joined in 1997.

With a solid foundation and reputation, Ophthalmology Associates of San Antonio has grown to meet the need for additional quality eye care in outlying areas. Today, the practice boasts five world-class Eye MDs.

Listed in the annual publication, “Best Doctors”, and named in Texas Monthly’s “Texas Super Doctors” from 2005 until 2019, Dr. Campagna is a member of the Order of St. John, which operates the St. John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem. He is also a Global Health Volunteer for Unite for Sight. Most recently, he delivered eye care and surgery to west Africans in rural Ghana and at the Crystal Eye Hospital in Accra. 

Alongside his clinical role, he holds a faculty appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. 

Born and raised in western Pennsylvania, Dr. Campagna graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pittsburgh in 1984. He then went on to obtain his medical degree from the same educational venue, graduating cum laude in 1988 and being inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his transitional internship at Letterman Army Medical Center in 1989 and his residency in ophthalmology was completed in 1992 at the University of South Florida at Tampa, where he served as chief resident throughout his senior year. Following this, he completed his glaucoma fellowship at the University of Iowa in 1993, where he was the recipient of the Heed Foundation Fellowship in postgraduate ophthalmology.

That same year, Dr. Campagna was assigned to Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas as the Director of Glaucoma Services. He has received numerous military and civilian awards for his research and presentations, which have been presented at several local, national, and international ophthalmic meetings, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Moreover, he served as the first-year resident advisor for the combined residency programs at Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center, and as a committee member of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company. 

On July 12th of 1997, Major Campagna completed his tour of duty and was honorably discharged. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his contributions to medical education and patient care while on active duty.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO), whose mission is to serve the public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a process of certification and Maintenance of Certification that fosters excellence and encourages continual learning. He also serves as an Examiner and Exam Development Committee member for the ABO. 

In addition to having served as President and Educational Program Director for the San Antonio Society of Ophthalmology, he remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Glaucoma Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the American Eye Study Club (emeritus member).

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.

On a more personal note, Dr. Campagna’s wife, Gretchen, is a chemical engineer who works for DPT Laboratories/Mylan in San Antonio. They have two children, Giovanni and Gabriella. Dr. Campagna’s current hobbies include playing tennis, pen turning, and photography.
