Dr. Payne is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist whose areas of expertise include infertility and in-vitro fertilization, reproductive endocrine disorders and menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, pubertal abnormalities, and advanced surgical procedures. He is a Partner and the Director of Third Party Reproduction at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group with offices throughout the State of South Carolina, including Greenville, Columbia, Asheville, and Spartanburg.

A native South Carolinian, Dr. Payne finished his undergraduate degree at Furman University and earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, completing his internship and residency at Madigan Army Medical Center. He then subspecialized in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, completing his REI Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center.
The doctor served in the U.S. Army for 17 years and had a distinguished military career, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was awarded many honors, including the Army Meritorious Service Medal in Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
He was the Division Director for REI at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he oversaw the military’s largest IVF practice with over 450 cycles yearly, trained many OB/GYN residents and REI fellows, as well as held multiple academic appointments, including Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at USUHS School of Medicine, Clinical Associate of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical Center, and Clinical Instructor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Georgia.
In addition to having been published and having presented numerous times, Dr. Payne is double board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology & reproductive endocrinology and infertility by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The ABOG is a non-profit organization that provides board certification for practicing obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States and Canada.
Reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) is a surgical subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology that trains physicians in reproductive medicine addressing hormonal functioning as it pertains to reproduction, as well as the issue of infertility. Reproductive endocrinologists are the only doctors trained in providing fertility treatments using assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and egg freezing. They are also trained in obstetrics and gynecology, and then have additional training to provide fertility treatment.
