An established internist, Dr. Fullerton is the Founder and President of Hampton Health, Ltd. in San Francisco, California. Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Fullerton completed his undergraduate work in Biology at the College of William & Mary and graduated with honors in 1980. He received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1985 and completed his residency at Pacific Presbyterian Hospital, where he was awarded the Resident of the Year Award and served as Chief Medical Resident in 1988.

Licensed to practice medicine in both California and Florida, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Moreover, he is board-certified in hospice and palliative medicine and holds national certificates of added qualifications as a Certified Medical Director (CMD) at multiple levels of care locally and in Home Care (AAHCP).

Finally, Dr. Fullerton is board-certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM), and in 2011 was among a small number of addiction specialists chosen to sit for the Boards sponsored by the American Academy of Medical Review Officers – (AAMRO) and received his MRO certification from the Medical Review Officers Certification Counsel (MROCC).

Achieving fellowship status, he is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society (AGSF), Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM), and Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (FASAM).

Continuously advancing his efforts, Dr. Fullerton is an active member of the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association, the Marin Medical Society, the American Medical Directors Association, the American Academy of Home Care Physicians, and the San Francisco Medical Society.

To boot, he proudly serves on the Board of Directors of the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine (CALTCM), where he is also Chair of the Legislative Sub-Committee and Member of the Policy and Professional Services Committee; and further serves as the AMDA Chair of Public Policy for the State of California.

Among his other roles, Dr. Fullerton maintains staff privileges at Marin General Hospital where he is an active member of the Laboratory Liaison Committee and typically utilizes and communicates frequently with the ER and/or the hospitalists. He can also be found on staff at St. Mary’s Hospital.

With a passion for teaching, he serves on the clinical faculty of UCSF, USC and Yale University Medical Schools in their respective Departments of Medicine and has served as a clinical instructor for medical students and residents at the San Francisco Free Clinic, an affiliate of UCSF and Yale.

Previously, Dr. Fullerton served as a clinical preceptor and occasional geriatrics lecturer for the Stanford University School of Medicine Primary Care Associate Program, whose PA-students rotated through his on-site geriatrics office at Aegis of Corte Madera, as do the students of the Physician Assistant Program from Samuel Merritt University currently. He was also named the Director of Geriatric Training for the Internal Medicine Residents at St. Mary’s Medical Center (Dignity Healthcare-SF) in 2009 where internal medicine medical residents rotated, utilizing the Aegis of Corte Madera and San Rafael medical office sites as core geriatric teaching sites for their month-long rotation with him. He retired from the position in October 2016.

Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in Internal Medicine are called Internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.

Among his various accolades, Dr. Fullerton was awarded the International Organizational Heroes Award from the Berkeley School of Public Health, Congressional Award by the NRCC – California Physician of the Year (2003), and Consumer Reports Award for Best Doctor in America (2007-2008). He was also honored by Mayor Frank Jordon on December 14th, 1994, a day which was proclaimed “Dr. John Fullerton Day in San Francisco”, citing his large body of hospital-based work; teaching and caring for the San Francisco urban under-served; and his devotion to caring for geriatric patients, acute rehabilitation patients, organ transplant patients, hospice and palliative care of the terminally ill, and patients with HIV/AIDS.
