Throughout his career, Dr. Katona has served as Chief of Orthopedics at Holy Name Hospital, President of the Holy Name Hospital Medical Staff in 1993 – 1994, and Director of Surgery from 1995 – 2001. He served on Holy Name’s Executive Committee and was also Chairman of the Bylaws Committee. Furthermore, he was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Albert Einstein and Jacobi Hospital for many years.
As an avid and enthusiastic athlete growing up, he experienced multiple fractures and ligament injuries. Despite these mishaps, his passion for sports continued unabated through medical school at George Washington University and persisted even through his general surgical residency.
Eventually, his interest in sports evolved into an interest in sports medicine. Dr. Katona completed his orthopedic residency at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. While in Montreal, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Turkey as a general medical officer. After a stint at Fort Patterson Army hospital in New Jersey, he returned to McGill to complete his orthopedic training in 1977.
A member of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.
Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
A Castle Connolly Regional Top Doctor, Dr. Katona has also received the Top Doctor Award by Jersey’s Best Magazine in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, the Top Orthopedic Doctor Award in Jersey’s Best Magazine in 2017 and 2018, and the Top Doctor Award in New York Magazine in 2021.
