John M. Lyons, III, MD, FACS, FSSO: Pioneering Cancer Care Through Collaborative Practice and Minimally Invasive Surgery

Dedicated to Advancing Cancer Care Through his Clinical Practice, Research, and Education

A fellowship-trained surgical oncologist, Dr. Lyons is dedicated to providing cutting-edge cancer care focused on individualized treatment plans. As the chair of the hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) disease team at Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he has established the state’s first high-risk pancreas cancer screening program, further emphasizing his commitment to early detection and prevention.

In his clinical role, he specializes in the management of complex cancers affecting the stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and more, while also addressing skin and soft tissue cancers. He takes pride in his ability to perform many surgical procedures using minimally invasive techniques, enhancing recovery and reducing complications for his patients. Notably, he was the first surgeon in Louisiana to conduct a major hepatectomy for cancer using a completely robotic surgical approach.

With an impressive educational background from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, followed by advanced training at the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Dr. Lyons brings a wealth of expertise to his practice. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and the Society of Surgical Oncologists (FSSO).

“In cancer treatment, I believe that communication and collaboration are key,” said Dr. Lyons. “I approach each case as a team sport, discussing my patients’ conditions at multidisciplinary cancer conferences that include specialists from various fields. This ensures that we develop the best possible treatment plan tailored to each individual.”

In addition to his clinical work, he is a Clinical Associate Professor for the LSU Department of Surgery, where he actively trains and mentors the next generation of medical professionals. His leadership extends to various roles within the cancer center, and he has recently been appointed Chairman of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer for Louisiana.

Furthermore, Dr. Lyons has contributed to the scientific community as an author and co-author of multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and textbook chapters, and he is involved in several cancer clinical trials, both locally and nationally.
