Dr. Timmerman is a board certified hematologist-oncologist currently practicing at Santa Monica Cancer Care at UCLA Health in Santa Monica, California. Prior to medical school, Dr. Timmerman received his undergraduate degrees in biochemistry and physiology from the University of California, Berkeley, and his Master’s degree from Boston University.

Following his training, Dr. Timmerman attained board certification in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The American Board of Internal Medicine is a 501 nonprofit, self-appointed physician-evaluation organization that certifies physicians practicing internal medicine and its subspecialties. The American Board of Internal Medicine is not a membership society, educational institution, or licensing body.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. It involves treating diseases that affect the production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, bone marrow, platelets, blood vessels, spleen, and the mechanism of coagulation. Such diseases might include hemophilia, blood clots (thrombus), other bleeding disorders, and blood cancers such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma.

Oncology is the study of cancer. The field of oncology has three major areas: medical, surgical, and radiation. A medical oncologist treats cancer using chemotherapy or other medications, such as targeted therapy or immunotherapy. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. A radiation oncologist treats cancer using radiation therapy.

Licensed to practice in California, Dr. Timmerman maintains hospital privileges at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Los Angeles, California, and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center in Santa Monica, California. Included in Southern California Super Doctors® (2010-2012), he is actively involved in research with a special interest in the treatment of non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphomas, tumor immunology, and immunotherapy of lymphomas.
