A member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in congenital cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

A pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon treats infants, children and teens with serious heart or lung conditions that require surgical procedures. Through the organization, Dr. Kupferschmid participates in programs in Mongolia, Kosovo, and Iraq. He travels abroad a couple times a year as part of a team that performs operations, while training surgeons in these regions.
