Get to know Oncologist Dr. John Pegram Ford.

Dr. Ford in the 1980s founded Actagen/lifecodes that introduced DNA based testing to human diagnostics.  More recently Dr. Ford has developed a topical agent to mitigate the cutaneous toxicity (HFS) form the chemotherapeutic 5FU.  Still, more recently he is working for FDA approval for a magnetoencephalography (MEG) based device to assess human cognition.  Dr. Ford has also developed a dashboard for medical information display. Finally, together with Penn State researchers, Dr. Ford has published work on esophageal oncogenesis.  This research continues with promising possibilities.

Dr. Ford has been an oncologist affiliated with Mount Nittany Medical Center, based in State College, Pennsylvania form 2003 until 2016.  Mount Nittany Medical Center is a 260-bed acute-care facility offering medical, surgical, diagnostic and community service. It is a part of Mount Nittany Health – which provides primary, specialized, emergency and surgical care to the residents of Central Pennsylvania. Integrated as a multi-branch organization in 2011, Mount Nittany Health is the parent organization for: Mount Nittany Medical Center; Mount Nittany Physician Group, a group of more than 150 healthcare providers, across more than 30 specialties in 17 convenient locations; as well as Mount Nittany Health Foundation, the fundraising entity for Mount Nittany Health developments.

Dr. Ford received his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. He then went on to complete his residency at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, followed by his fellowship training at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Dr. Ford is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. Certification has meant that internists have demonstrated – to their peers and to the public – that they have the clinical judgment, skills and attitudes essential for the delivery of excellent patient care.

Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. As an oncologist, Dr. Ford is trained to diagnose and treat all types and forms of cancer. He may employ a variety of diagnostic tests such as biopsies, imaging tests, endoscopic tests and laboratory tests. He may also offer treatment techniques such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy to combat the spread of cancer.
