Renowned Surgeon and Health Advocate Celebrates Decades of Service and Leadership
Dr. Jon Lloyd, a distinguished medical professional with a career spanning over five decades, has made significant contributions to the fields of surgery, public health, and community wellness. Currently, he serves as a Senior Associate with the Positive Deviance Initiative at Health Resources in Action, coaching initiatives aimed at improving education and mental health outcomes. He also holds the position of Chairman of the Board at Youth Opportunity Development, where he advocates for youth empowerment and health equity.
Graduating with a B.A. in German and Comparative Literature from the University of Utah in 1964, followed by a medical degree in 1968, his journey is marked by a commitment to excellence in medicine and a passion for improving healthcare systems. He completed a rigorous residency in general, thoracic, and vascular surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, later serving as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Shadyside Hospital from 1978 to 1988.
His clinical practice as a general and vascular surgeon spanned 35 years, during which he developed a reputation for his surgical expertise and compassionate patient care. Notably, he served in the U.S. Army Third Field Hospital in Saigon, Vietnam, where he gained invaluable experience in high-stakes medical environments.
In 1997, Dr. Lloyd played a pivotal role in founding the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative (PRHI) alongside prominent leaders, including former Alcoa CEO Paul O’Neill. As Medical Director until 2004, he championed innovative healthcare practices that fostered collaboration among local hospitals and healthcare providers.
In 2004, he took on the role of Pittsburgh Project Coordinator for the CDC and the Veterans Administration Pittsburgh Healthcare System, focusing on a critical mission to eliminate endemic MRSA infections in local hospitals. His work introduced the Positive Deviance (PD) approach, transforming organizational culture to enhance MRSA prevention strategies. As Co-Principal Investigator of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant, he was instrumental in developing programs that have far-reaching implications for patient safety.
In addition to his domestic efforts, Dr. Lloyd is a member of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and volunteers as a medical missionary, providing essential medical relief to Syrian refugees in Al Zaatari, a camp near the Jordanian/Syrian border.
