Dr. Matus is a board-certified neurologist featuring thirty-six years of experience. In practice at the Texas Institute for neurological Disorders, which he joined in 2003, Dr. Matus is versed in all aspects of neurology, but remains a diagnostician at heart. While he likes acute care neurology, he also does several neuro-diagnostic procedures like EMG/ NCV, EEGs, and Carotid Ultrasound. Dr. Matus has a keen interest in vestibular dysfunctions and non-medical ways to help alleviate this difficult problem.
A people person, he takes pride in making sure he has spent enough time with each and every patient. Throughout his career, he has held two directorships, i.e., Medical Director of Rehabilitation Hospital at Carrus Hospitals, and Co-Medical Director of Reba Rehabilitation Center. Current hospital affiliations include Baylor Medical Center of McKinney, Carrus Speciality Hospitals in Sherman, Carrus Rehab, PAM Rehab Allen, Medical City McKinney, Medical City Lewisville, Texoma Medical Center, and Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center.
In 1982, Dr. Matus was awarded his medical degree from the School of Medicine at The Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala in Guatemala. He remained in Guatemala for his internal medicine training at San Juan de Dios General Hospital in Guatemala City. After his relocation to the United States, he joined the VA Medical Center in Fresno, CA, for his internship (1991-1992). Dr. Matus completed his neurology residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California (1992-1995). He is fellowship-trained in Epilepsy via a Kiffin Penry Epilepsy Mini Fellowship in Winston-Salem, NC.
Upon the completion of his training, Dr. Matus obtained board certification in neurology from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation that was founded in 1934 as a method of identifying qualified specialists in psychiatry and neurology. The ABPN is one of 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the central and peripheral nervous systems, including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle.
Dr. Matus’ active professional memberships include the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Association of Neuromuscular and ElectroDiagnostic Medicine, the Dallas Medical Society, and the Texas Medical Association. Over the years, Dr. Matus has been named Best of Texoma Neurologist (2014) and America’s Top Physician (2011-2012) in addition to being honored with the Patients’ Choice Award (2012) by vitals.com.
On a more personal note, Dr. Matus and his wife live in Sherman with their twin children. Outside work, he loves to spend time with his kids and participate in their school activities. A ski enthusiast, he is also very active in his church.
