With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Valerio is a board-certified neurosurgeon who specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery in outpatient settings for quick recovery and a return to normal life. He is well regarded in the Latin American and Florida community, earning numerous accolades for his extraordinary ability to complete the most complex neurosurgical cases. 

Dr. Valerio is currently serving patients at the Miami Neuroscience Center at Larkin in South Miami, Florida. The Miami Neuroscience Center at Larkin is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide solutions for patients with neurological conditions such as brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations (AVM), migraine headaches, trigeminal neuralgia, occipital neuralgia, herniated discs, and spinal compression – to name a few. Providing a full spectrum of services including stereotactic radiosurgery, neurosurgery, and pain management services, the Miami Neuroscience Center at Larkin offers comprehensive and personalized treatment approaches for patients experiencing major life events. Dr. Valerio’s main focus at the Center is complex spine pathology and spine tumors. 

In addition to acute spine trauma, Dr. Valerio specializes in neurosurgical oncology at Larkin Hospital, Palmetto General Hospital, and Aventura Hospital & Medical Center. 

Dr. Valerio is experienced in surgeries such as endoscopic skull base surgery, balloon compression and gamma knife radiosurgery for trigeminal neuralgia, spine surgery, and radiosurgery of the brain and spine. Among other things, he has a special interest in new surgical methods such as arthroplasty, kyphoplasty, sacroiliac fusion, and spine tumor surgeries. 

Dr. Valerio’s extensive experience in neurosurgical oncology also provides him the skill for LASER and OPTUNE™ therapy. These treatments are noninvasive management options for some patients with a recurrence of glioblastoma multiforme, which is a form of brain cancer in which surgery and other treatments, such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy, are no longer an option.

What makes Dr. Valerio stand out as a neurosurgeon is his elaborate training in various areas of expertise within his field. He is continuously pursuing to advance his knowledge in neurosurgery with new innovative technologies and procedure techniques.

Dr. Valerio earned his medical degree from the University of Costa Rica in San Jose, Costa Rica. He completed his residency at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, followed by his fellowship in neurosurgical oncology and spine surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Brain Tumor Institute. He also completed an additional fellowship at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Furthermore, Dr. Valerio holds a Master of Business Administration degree from George Washington University. 

Dr. Valerio is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He is also a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the Society for Neuro-Oncology. Dr. Valerio has been honored with several awards throughout his line of work, including the American Brain Tumor Association Young Investigator Award, the Musella Foundation Award, and the Cleveland Clinic Clinical Research Award.

Dr. Valerio’s interest to promote education led him to organize multiple scientific teaching programs. He is the Director of the Brain Tumor & Minimally Invasive Spine Symposium organized by the Latin American Federation of Neurosurgical Societies in Florida. This event integrates the North American and Latin American neurosurgical communities.
