Get to know Colorectal Surgeon Dr. Joseph Coury, who serves patients throughout the State of Virginia.

Well-versed in the field of colorectal surgery, Dr. Coury joined Colon & Rectal Specialists in August 2017. He specializes in minimally invasive surgery including robotic surgery of the colon and rectum. He also has a special interest in treating fecal incontinence and obstructive defecation syndrome in patients with rectoceles. He currently sees patients at the North Side office in Mechanicsville.

Established in 1913, Colon & Rectal Specialists (CRS) is one of the oldest continually operating groups of colon and rectal surgeons in the country and the largest state-of-the-art practice on the East Coast with three locations around Richmond, Virginia. Their physicians and staff are committed to providing all patients the special care and education needed for the treatment of colon and rectal problems.

Academically, Dr. Coury received his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia and then earned a Master’s degree in Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown University. He graduated with his medical degree from the Eastern Virginia Medical School, and completed his residency in general surgery at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. He finished his training with a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery with the Mount Carmel Health System.

Passionate about his profession, the doctor is board-certified in colon & rectal surgery and general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

On a professional level, he is an active member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons.

Colorectal surgery is a field in medicine dealing with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon. The field is also known as proctology, but this term is now used infrequently within medicine and is most often employed to identify practices relating to the anus and rectum in particular. A colorectal surgeon is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of anorectal and colorectal conditions (conditions of the colon, rectum, and anus).

In his free time, Dr. Coury enjoys traveling and SCUBA diving. He is also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
