Get to know Dermatologist Dr. Joseph L. Jorizzo, who serves patients in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Jorizzo diagnoses skin problems and develops unique treatment plans for each individual patient. “My passion throughout my career in dermatology has been to care for adult and pediatric patients with complex medical dermatology problems. My research and publications focus on dermatologic manifestations of internal medical diseases. I also care for patients with common dermatologic problems of skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes” he stated.

Professionally, he is on staff at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Brenner Children’s Hospital, both of which are located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. 

Alongside his professional roles, Dr. Jorizzo serves as Professor of Clinical Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City, New York. He also remains a Professor, Former and Founding Chair of the Dermatology Department at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

In regards to his educational background, he earned his medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Massacchusets. Thereafter, he went on to complete his internship in internal medicine and his residency in dermatology at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. He also completed his fellowship at St. John’s Hospital Dermatology Institute in London, England. 

Shortly after, he became board-certified in dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology (ABD). Since its inception in 1932, the ABD has certified over 15,000 physicians in dermatology, dermatopathology, and pediatric dermatology. 

In addition to having been on a myriad councils, committees, and advisory boards, Dr. Jorizzo has been on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dermatology, the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, and the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology – among others. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Dermatologic Association Society of Investigative Dermatology, the American College of Cryosurgery, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, the American Federation of Clinical Research, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Dermatology Foundation, the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons, the American Laryngological, Rhinological & Otological Society, the Association of Professors of Dermatology, the Association of Physician Assistant Programs, the British Association of Dermatologists, the British Biochemistry Society, the British Toxicology Society, the Chauncey Leake History of Medicine Society, the Fayette County Medical Society, the Forsyth County Medical Society, the Forsyth Prepared Childbirth Association, the Galveston County Medical Society, the Houston Dermatological Society, the Hughston Sports Medicine Society, the Hawthorne Surgical Center, the Dowling Club-UK, the Eye Study Club, the Immunology Club – University of Texas, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Communications Society, the Women’s Dermatology Association, and the American Academy of Dermatology, where he served as Vice President.

As an expert in his field, Dr. Jorizzo has co-edited several books, including Dermatological Signs of Internal Disease by Callen and Jorizzo, and Dermatology by Bolognia, Jorizzo, and Rapini for Elsevier. Additionally, he has authored and co-authored over 200 articles and abstracts, including chapters in major rheumatology and gastroenterology books, and has spoken at hundreds of dermatology meetings in the United States and around the world.

Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin, nails, hair and its diseases. It is a specialty with both medical and surgical aspects. Dermatologists are medical practitioners who specialize in treating conditions of the skin (most commonly acne), sunburn, and skin cancer. Their duties include taking consultations, providing screening tests, and undertaking non-invasive surgical procedures. 

In addition to English, he speaks Italian and Spanish.
