With a broad educational background, Dr. Calderone, Jr. graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross. He then went on to earn his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 1982, after which he performed his internship at Albany Medical Center and his residency in ophthalmology at New York Medical College in 1983 and 1987, respectively. 

With over 30 years of excellence in eye care, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

Among his other roles, Dr. Calderone, Jr. is a Clinical Instructor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, a Clinical Assistant Professor at Seton Hall University School of Graduate Medical Education, the Medical Director of Somerset Eye Institute (on the Board of Directors since 1995), an attending physician at Overlook Hospital and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway (former chairman of ophthalmology), and on adjunct staff at Trinitas Hospital.

In affiliation with many professional societies, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, as well as a member of both the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
