Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Juan R. Sanabria, who serves patients in Huntington, West Virginia.

Dr. Sanabria is a general surgeon whose interests include primary liver tumors and liver regeneration, treatments for locally advanced liver and pancreas tumors, and patient/population outcomes. He is currently serving patients at Marshall Health – a large health care provider group in Huntington, West Virginia. Marshall Health will provide high-quality health care to its patients regardless of age, race, ethnicity, gender, other personal characteristics or socioeconomic status while supporting the educational, research, and service missions of the Joan C Edwards School of Medicine.

Dr. Sanabria is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to provide board certification to individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge in the field of surgery. Board certification by the ABS is a voluntary process that demonstrates a surgeon’s commitment to professionalism, lifelong learning, and quality patient care.

Dr. Sanabria is certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).

Dr. Sanabria grew up in South America where he obtained his M.D. – a degree that was subsequently validated at the University of Toronto. During his stay in Toronto, he completed his residency in general surgery at Toronto General Hospital and at Mount Sinai Hospital. He also completed his fellowship training in hepatobiliary, pancreatic surgery, and abdominal transplantation at Toronto General Hospital.

Dr. Sanabria has published more than 20 peer review papers and was a part of the team that started the living related liver transplantation program, which is nowadays the most successful program of its kind in America. He was also a part of the team that started the Mount Sinai Cancer Registry for patients with familial polyposis, which has evolved to become the Ontario Cancer Registry – the largest cancer registry in Canada today.

Dr. Sambria has successfully started liver and pancreas transplant programs in Ohio. He has also established a basic, translational, and clinical research program at Case Western Reserve University, where he still has his laboratory and holds a faculty position.

Dr. Sambria is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. As a general surgeon, Dr. Sanabria specializes in transplant surgery and HPB (Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary) surgery. HPB surgery is a subspecialty of surgery specific to benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas, and biliary tree.
