Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Kamilah Jackson, who serves patients throughout the State of New Jersey.

Dr. Jackson is a child, adolescent, adult and maternal mental health psychiatrist practicing in the state of New Jersey. She specializes in the care of patients with a special focus on their mental health across the life course and the pregnancy/postpartum period. 

As a psychiatrist, Dr. Jackson diagnoses and treats mental illnesses and partners with patients, their families and ecosystems to achieve whole health. She treats conditions like depression, anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, bipolar disorders, personality disorders, insomnia, ADD and other mental illnesses. She may also treat patients through a variety of methods, including medications, psychotherapy or talk therapy, psychosocial interventions and more, depending on each individual case.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Jackson received her medical degree from the Columbia University Roy and Diana Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2004. She then completed her residency training in adult psychiatry at the Emory University School of Medicine in 2007, serving as John Schowalter Chief Resident at the Yale Child Study Center and as Edward Zigler Fellow in Child Development and Social Policy for the 2008–2009 academic year.

From 2009-2010, she was a Mongan Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Minority Health Policy Fellow at Harvard Medical School and Harvard University School of Public Health, where she also obtained a Master of Public Health degree.

Board-certified in adult psychiatry & child and adolescent psychiatry, Dr. Jackson is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.

From July 2019 until February 2023, Dr. Jackson served as the Medical Director of PerformCare NJ, the contracted systems administrator of the New Jersey Children’s System of Care. She is the former Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Child and Adolescent Services at Community Behavioral Health (CBH) and the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services in Philadelphia (DBHIDS) where she served for nearly 8 years providing clinical leadership to CBH and DBHIDS in addressing the behavioral health needs of children supported by the public behavioral health system in Philadelphia. She is also the former Principal Investigator for the Philadelphia Alliance for Child Trauma Services (PACTS) grant awarded to DBHIDS, served a 3-year term on the National Advisory Committee for the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and was on the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) Steering Committee (2017-2019). 

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.

Serving on several non-profit boards, Dr. Jackson is a Board Member of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, the Kenworthy Swift Foundation, the Philadelphia Health Partnership, and Miracle of Help.

In addition, she has practiced in numerous hospital and community mental health settings, including a faith-based community health center. Her interests include health equity, mental health parity, strengthening public mental health safety nets for children and families and health integration, as well as increasing the diversity of the healthcare workforce.
