Get to know Interventional Radiologist Dr. Karen Garby, who serves patients in Arizona. 

An interventional radiologist, Dr. Garby is the Director of Venous Intervention at Comprehensive Integrated Care. She sees patients at the offices in Gilbert, Tempe and Flagstaff, Arizona, using her experience and state-of-the-art equipment to help patients get the symptom relief they need for a better quality of life.

Self-motivated and results driven to succeed, she focuses on treating central and peripheral vein disease, lymphedema, and uterine fibroids – three common conditions affecting millions of individuals annually. She finds it rewarding to help her patients feel better with less down-time. She is also a subject expert in venous disease and vascular ultrasound, vital to diagnosis arterial and venous disease. 

Locally, she is affiliated with several hospitals, including St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Banner Baywood Medical Center, Banner Desert Medical Center, and Banner Heart Hospital.

Regarding her educational background, Dr. Garby earned her medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia in 1992. She then went on to perform her residency in radiology at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and her fellowship in interventional radiology at Case Western. 

Board-certified in diagnostic radiology by the American Board of Radiology, she keeps up with the latest in her field by remaining an active member of many professional organizations, including the Society of Interventional Radiology. 

With multiple publications to her credit, Dr. Garby has submitted several projects including those in the Proceedings of Neuroradiology, the Journal of Endovascular Surgery, and JVIR. She currently sits on the committee to write exam questions for the RPhs certification national standardized test.

Interventional radiology is a medical specialization that involves performing a range of imaging procedures to obtain images of the inside of the body. Vascular & interventional radiologists focus on diseases of the blood vessels and lymphatic system, but also treat other conditions such as cancer and infertility. They perform minimally invasive treatments that have less risk, pain, and recovery time compared to open surgery.

Throughout her 20+ year career, Dr. Garby has been a recipient of many awards and honors, including Patients’ Choice Award (2017, 2018), On-Time Doctor Award (2017, 2018), and Compassionate Doctor Award (2017, 2018).

Although being a physician doesn’t always allow her a lot of spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family. They enjoy outdoor adventure activities, skiing, and boating. She personally enjoys cooking and has been practicing Pilates for decades.
