Karen Tsuchida, RN, Level III Registered Nurse

Get to know Level III Registered Nurse Karen Tsuchida, who serves patients in Los Angeles, California.

Born in Hawaii, Karen is a Level III Registered Nurse who is currently serving patients at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution that provides pediatric health care and helps patients more than half a million times each year in a setting designed just for their needs. 

Karen has been involved with the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles RN Residency Emergency Program for the past several years, serving as an instructor for new residents and experienced new hires. She guides them through the clinical area where nursing is practiced and introduces the emergency protocols of the hospital. In conjunction with her career at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Karen is a part of the primary unit that cares for orthopedic patients – especially spinal fusion and neurosurgical patients.

Karen earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Creighton University in 1982. She continued her studies by becoming certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Throughout her thirty-six years in the nursing field, she has accrued extensive expertise in the fields of surgical care, pediatrics, and orthopaedic nursing.

In order to stay up-to-date on all medical advancements in her field, Karen maintains a professional membership with the American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association, the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses, and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

For a couple of years now, Karen has provided a lot of support to the Annual Cereal Drive at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Due to her extensive support, she will take on the responsibility of co-chair with Jacquelyn Gayer.

Due to her philanthropic initiatives and outstanding achievements, Karen has earned several recognitions for her dedication to the field of nursing, including a Daisy Award in 2012 and a Certificate of Excellence 2011. Karen’s motivation at the start of each day comes from knowing that she can make a difference in an individual’s life by making him or her better.

Karen attributes her success to her good work ethic, which she said she inherited from her parents. She also had a strong support system in high school and great mentors throughout college and throughout her professional career – all of whom gave her the drive to push forward and succeed. 

When asked why she chose a career in nursing, Karen said that her pediatric nurse and PMD inspired her. They were very caring and knowledgeable, always making her feel comfortable and putting her at ease. 

The main role of a registered nurse is to assist physicians in providing treatment to patients suffering from various medical conditions. While their primary responsibilities involve caring for patients, their specific job duties vary depending on the employer and specialization. Level III Registered Nurses, like Karen, are accountable for the provision of expert patient care, including service to patients with complex needs. They have increased responsibilities that may include staff orientation, patient care coordination or other unit/service activities.

Karen is married. Her favorite place to vacation is in Hawaii. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking and baking.
