Kay is a registered nurse who is currently retired having served patients in Illinois and Alabama during her career. She specializes in psychiatric nursing (also known as mental health nursing). Psychiatric nursing is the appointed position of a nurse who specializes in mental health and cares for people of all ages experiencing mental illnesses or distress. These include schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, paranoia, and self-harm and developmental disabilities.
During her career Kay was board-certified as a Clinical Specialist in Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (PMHCNS). A PMHCNS is a registered nurse with advanced education and clinical experience regarding issues related to the full range of psychiatric disorders.
During her 41 year career, Kay was the CEO of the Alton Mental Health Center in Alton, Illinois from 2001 until 2005, as well as the CEO of the North Alabama Regional Hospital in Decatur, Alabama from 1989 until 2001. Furthermore, she served as Assistant Superintendent, as Director of Quality Assurance, and as Director of Nursing at the Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna, Illinois from 1977 until 1989. She also worked with Developmental Disabilities facilities in Illinois from 1965 through 1977 in the Illinois State Hospital system at Dixon and Elgin,Illinois. She retired in 2005 and is living in Golconda, Il.
Kay earned her RN Diploma at KSB School of Nursing in Dixon, IL in 1965. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Health Arts from College of St. Francis, Aurora, IL in 1977. She then went on to earn her Master of Science from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale campus in 1983. In order to stay up to date in her field, Kay attained her ANA Clinical Specialist Certification in Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing in 1985. She maintained a professional membership with the Nurses Associations at the state and national levels and the Alabama Hospital Association. Kay attribute her success to having a wonderful , professional, supportive staff and mentors who provided guidance and encouragement throughout her career.
A registered nurse is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. In addition to the primary role in treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other job functions include performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.
