Get to know Optometrist Dr. Kerry A. Horner, who serves patients in Modesto, California.
An experienced optometrist, Dr. Horner has provided optometric care to the Modesto Community for over five decades.
In his current role as the President of Sylvan Eye Associates, he offers the following services: complete eye exams, contact lenses, glasses, glaucoma testing, and cataract and Lasik pre- and post-operative care.
His education and training include a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of California, Berkeley and a Doctor of Optometry Degree from UC Berkeley School of Optometry in 1972. He is a Viet-Nam Era Veteran having served in the U.S. Army from 1972-1974, and then began private practice in Modesto in 1974.
Since 1981, Dr. Horner has been an Assistant Clinical Professor at UC Berkeley School of Optometry. He has designed and taught classes in Optometric Assisting at Modesto Junior College and has been an instructor for the California Optometric Association Congress.
As a dedicated professional, Dr. Horner is affiliated with several prestigious organizations, including the American Academy of Optometry (Fellow), the American Optometric Association (Contact Lens Section), the California Optometric Association, and the San Joaquin Optometric Society (past-president).
In addition, he is the Founder of the Modesto Optometric Emergency Service.
Optometry is a health care profession that involves examining the eyes and applicable visual systems for defects or abnormalities, as well as diagnosing and managing eye disease. Optometrists are healthcare professionals who provide primary eye care through comprehensive eye examinations to detect and treat various visual abnormalities and eye diseases. Being a regulated profession, an optometrist’s scope of practice may differ depending on the location. Thus, disorders or diseases detected outside the treatment scope of optometry (i.e. those requiring certain surgical interventions) are referred out to relevant medical professionals for proper care. Optometrists typically work closely together with other eye care professionals, such as ophthalmologists and opticians, to deliver quality and efficient eye care to the general public.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Horner enjoys woodworking. He is also a 50-gallon donor at the Red Cross Blood Bank, and has served on the Board of Directors at the YMCA, Kiwanis Club of North Modesto, and the American Diabetes Association.
