Get to know Physiatrist Dr. Kevin P. Murphy, who serves patients throughout Minnesota.
An experienced physiatrist, Dr. Murphy is the Medical Director of Pediatric Rehabilitation for Sanford Health Systems, working with patients at the Sanford Bemidji Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Center in Bemidji, Minnesota, and at the Sanford Northern Sky Clinic in Bismarck, North Dakota. He is also the CEO and Chief Medical Officer for Northland Pediatric Rehabilitation LLC, a private practice consulting service for pediatric rehabilitation medicine.
Believing in putting the patient above all else, his clinical expertise includes rural specialty healthcare, pediatrics, adults with childhood-onset disability (lifespan care), musculoskeletal medicine/ultrasound, neuromuscular, and brain injury medicine.
Before embarking on his professional journey, he attended the University of St. Thomas for his undergraduate education, and completed his medical education and internship at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. He then went on to complete his residency in general surgery at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and his fellowship in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Children’s Hospital of Northern California.
As a testament of his continued education, the doctor is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and pediatric rehabilitation medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR). The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). This is accomplished through a process of certification and maintenance of certification that fosters excellence and encourages continuous learning.
Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry and physiatrics, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. Physiatrists treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.
In his free time, Dr. Murphy enjoys scuba diving, hiking, reading and practicing martial arts. He also enjoys spending time with his family and spending time on Rainy Lake. He is proud of his 24 years of service in the military, which included four combat tours in Iraq.
