Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Kevin R. Carlile, who serves patients in Algonquin, Illinois.

Highly trained in the field of orthopedic surgery, Dr. Carlile had known since high school that he wanted to be a physician and surgeon. His mother was a nurse, and her stories and experiences helped influence him. But it was his own treatment for sports-related injuries by orthopedic doctors that peaked his interest.

Working with patients at OrthoIllinois, his practice focuses on the operative treatment of general limb fractures, periarticular fractures, complex fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum (hip socket), periprosthetic fractures, and the treatment of multiple injured patients. His practice also includes limb salvage treatment for fracture malunions, non-unions, and infections.

Since its founding in 1967, Ortho Illinois has grown dynamically to become one of the leading bone and joint providers in northern Illinois. It provides exceptional care and expertise from five convenient clinic locations, two in Rockford, one in Elgin, one in Algonquin, and one in McHenry. The team of skilled surgeons, physicians, clinical, and support staff are committed to providing patients with a higher standard of care that is centered on returning them to a more pain-free and active life.

Licensed to practice medicine in Illinois, Dr. Carlile is affiliated with Advocate Sherman Hospital, Northwestern Hospital, AMITA Health Saint Joseph Hospital Elgin, OrthoIllinois Surgery Center, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, Mercy Rockford Hospital, SwedishAmerican Hospital, Huntley Hospital, McHenry Hospital, and Woodstock Hospital.

With an impressive orthopedic skillset, his professional affiliations include the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Orthopedic Trauma Association, and AO Trauma.

During summers in high school and college, Dr. Carlile worked in operating rooms at the hospital in his hometown. He prepped the rooms between surgeries and sometimes was able to observe actual surgeries. Witnessing orthopedic surgery in person was inspiring. The variability and complexity the surgeons faced and the required flexibility and problem solving required of them with different cases impressed him.

He attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree with Distinction. He pursued his medical degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio before completing five years of residency in orthopedic surgery at McGaw Medical Center Northwestern University Feinberg school of Medicine in Chicago.  Following residency, he completed a one year advanced training program, or fellowship, in orthopedic trauma surgery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at Allegheny General Hospital in affiliation with Drexel University and Temple University College of Medicine.

Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in orthopedic surgery through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Beyond his clinical interests, Dr. Carlile has a passion for educating. He volunteered several times in under-served countries such as Malawi and Ghana in Africa, where he taught students, residents, and mid-level health care workers how to provide non-operative and minimally operative care in areas without access to hospitals or formally trained orthopedists.

Outside of his professional and volunteer commitments, he stays active through fitness and travel. He enjoys listening to live music, playing golf, skiing, hiking, as well as spending time with family and friends.
