Kim-Doan Katrina Nguyen, MD Pediatric Gastroenterologist

Being a board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. Nguyen attributes her success to great mentorship and a strong work ethic taught by her family.

Following the completion of her medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in 2002, Dr. Nguyen completed her residency in internal medicine-pediatrics at the University of Missouri in Columbia, followed by her fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.

She worked at Augusta University in Georgia from August 2009 to May 2013 following completion of her fellowship. After that, she worked at Mercyhealth in Illinois from July 2013 until July 2020, serving patients in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.  She is currently a locum tenens physician.

Alongside her clinical role at Mercyhealth, Dr. Nguyen served as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford. She is the founder of Faithful-2-Fitness, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic in America. She is a member of the Catholic Medical Association and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

She is board-certified in both pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology by the American Board of Pediatrics, which exists to support and encourage the best possible health care for children by setting standards for medical training, assessing levels of competence, and encouraging pediatricians to stay up to date with medical knowledge and best practices. Pediatric gastroenterology is concerned with treating the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and pancreas of children from infancy until age eighteen. Pediatric gastroenterologists focus on problems unique to pediatric patients, including growth, maturation, physical and emotional development, and age-related social issues.

Among her philanthropic endeavours, Dr. Nguyen is a supporter of Faithful-2-Fitness, St Vincent de Paul Society, Food for the Poor, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Outside of practicing medicine, she enjoys gardening, baking, cooking, reading and writing. Her favorite professional publication is the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. She has presented at medical conferences and published several peer-reviewed research manuscripts. She will be publishing a memoir in November 2020 entitled Live to Give, with the hope of encouraging people to be more charitable with their time, talent and treasures.
