Kimberly Gordon-Achebe, MD, DFAPA: Championing Health Equity and Mental Health in BIPOC Communities

American Psychiatric Association, Distinguished Fellow and Jeanne Spurlock Awardee Receives Recognition for her Pioneering Work in Child, Adolescent and Community Psychiatry

Dr. Kimberly Gordon-Achebe is a visionary leader, acclaimed psychiatrist, and passionate advocate for health equity and social justice in Maryland. As a double board-certified psychiatrist, Medical Director for iMind Behavioral Health, Mobile Crisis Response and Stabilization Services, and CEO & Founder of BHETC, LLC (Bringing Health Equity Training & Consulting to Communities of Color) she serves as a community psychiatrist, health equity consultant and mindset coach, empowering Black, Indigenous, People of Color to redefine mental health, physical health and wellbeing to create healthier, more fulfilling lives. Her pioneering work has earned her prestigious awards and recognition, including the Jeanne Spurlock, M.D. Minority Fellowship Achievement Award, Distinguished Fellow designation as distinguished fellow of  the American Psychiatric Association, and the Women’s Wellness through Equity and Leadership (WEL) by the Physician Foundation. 

Through her dynamic leadership roles, as a clinician, educator, and consultant she develops transformative e-learning programs, engaging workshops, and personalized coaching that equips BIPOC and underserved populations with the tools and strategies to break free from societal barriers, overcome mental health challenges, trauma, grief and burnout, to unleash their full potential. Her extensive research and publications on the impact of discrimination on health disparities have significantly contributed to the discourse on mental health equity, shaping policies and practices in the field.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Gordon earned her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine, where she also completed her residency and fellowship in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. Her academic ties to Tulane remain strong, as she actively contributes to the institution as an adjunct faculty member. In addition, she holds prestigious leadership roles as Co-Director of the Child and Adolescent Committee for the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, Medical Director Institute, as well as Board Member-at-large for the American Association for Community Psychiatry. 

Her past service includes being the Former Program Director of University of Maryland Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship, Past President of the Caucus of Black Psychiatrists of the American Psychiatric Association and Vice-Chair for Council for Children Adolescents and Their Families.

A Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DFAPA), Dr. Gordon is board certified in both general and child and adolescent psychiatry. Her vast clinical expertise encompasses community psychiatry, mobile and crisis response, school-based mental health, residential treatment, and addressing complex pediatric trauma, with a strong emphasis on promoting diversity, inclusion, and health equity.

Dr. Gordon’s career is marked by a relentless pursuit of pediatric and women’s mental health equity. She possesses significant clinical experience in diagnosing and treating a wide array of pediatric and women mental health disorders, and she is deeply committed to educating the next generation of mental healthcare professionals.  Her work emphasizes the importance of understanding systems of care, social determinants of health, cultural competency, and structural competency in medicine.A sought-after speaker at national conferences, Dr. Gordon’s insights and leadership have inspired many health professionals to create educational resources and networks aimed at advancing mental health equity.
