Get to know Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Kywina Henderson, who serves patients in Sherman Oaks, California.

Kywina is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at Java Psychiatry and adjunct nursing faculty at Azusa Pacific University.

Kywina has an extensive clinical nursing leadership background managing multiple units in the acute care hospital setting to include critical care, emergency medicine and behavioral health.  Her communication skills convey her compassion and empathy toward others. She is a very good listener and always does her best to come from a practical and informed standpoint while educating her patients, always explaining the risks and benefits. She cares deeply about her patients, and her mission is to treat each individual with respect, dignity, and compassion.

Growing up in a small town, Kywina attended private schools in her early years and came from a very spiritual family. She was intrigued by medicine from an early age as she had a number of elderly family members with health issues. Nursing was a natural career path for her; she combined her love for the human body with her desire to alleviate suffering.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner, both from the University of Phoenix. She also holds a Post-Master’s Certificate in Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) from Azusa Pacific University, and will begin Aspen University’s DNP program in early 2023.  She is also working towards becoming a Certified Anxiety Treatment Professional using cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and mindfulness strategies.

Kywina remains an active member of the California Nurse Practitioners Association, the American Nurses Association, and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

A Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse trained to provide a wide range of mental health services to patients and families in a variety of settings. PMHNPs diagnose, conduct therapy, and prescribe medications for patients who have psychiatric disorders, medical organic brain disorders or substance abuse problems. They are licensed to provide emergency psychiatric services, psychosocial and physical assessment of their patients, treatment plans, and manage patient care. They may also serve as consultants or as educators for families and staff.

When she isn’t working, Kywina enjoys playing with her grandchildren and her dog, Lakota Scout, going to the movies, eating at good restaurants with her husband and spending time with family.
