Get to know Family Nurse Practitioner, Laura Franco Bowman, who serves patients in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Laura is a certified family nurse practitioner who is currently in practice at the office of Dr. Christina Collins in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The practice is dedicated to providing superior obstetric and gynecologic care catering to each individual patient. “We address acute issues in women’s health, as well as preventative measures to perpetuate wellness and beauty inside and out. Our mission is to help our patients accomplish these goals in a painless, compassionate, and efficient manner” as stated on their website.

In addition to women’s healthcare, Laura provides comprehensive care for the whole family. She also specializes in critical care and perioperative care, as well as holds a certificate in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

While completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Southern Connecticut State University, she worked at New Milford hospital in the ICU and same-day surgery unit. After graduation, she was offered a position in the ICU where she was able to hone her critical care skills. She worked per diem ICU at surrounding hospitals and eventually began spending half the year in Hawaii working ICU and outpatient surgery. After moving to Hawaii permanently, she became an Assistant Director of Outpatient Surgery until she decided to relocate to Boston, Massachusetts to complete her Master of Science in Nursing degree and certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, at Simmons University in 2018.

Both of Laura’s parents are involved in the science and healthcare fields so she was exposed early on. She has always been a natural caregiver who loves bringing light and a smile to others. The main thing she attributes her success to is the support of her family and mentors who encouraged her through schooling and early career processes. The colleagues in the hospital where she began her career inspired her and boosted her overall confidence. They pushed her to be better and to sharpen her skills. The teamwork environment of that first hospital both during her schooling and as a new nurse is something she carries with her.

In order to stay up to date in her field, Laura remains a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

A family nurse practitioner (FNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who works autonomously or in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, to deliver family-focused care. Given the rather broad nature of the “family” patient population focus, FNPs offer a wide range of healthcare services that revolve around the family unit; from health promotion and disease prevention to direct care and counseling across the lifespan.

Originally from New England, Laura has been a resident of Kona for 10 years. In her spare time, she can be found cooking and baking for friends and family, enjoying the beach, or traveling and fishing with her husband.
