Get to know Registered Nurse, Linda Dune, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.

Linda is a registered nurse who has extensive clinical experience in the field of critical care, emergency care, and medical-surgical nursing. Her bedside patient care experiences have influenced her interest in symptom management. She describes herself as being high tech/high touch. 

In her current position, Linda serves as the Director of Nursing & Associate Professor of the RN to BSN Program at the University of Houston-Downtown in Houston, Texas. The University of Houston–Downtown is a four-year state university and one of four distinct institutions in the University of Houston System. Its campus spans 40 acres in Downtown Houston, with a satellite location in northwestern Harris County.

Having a wide range of clinical experience, Linda has been able to teach successfully in a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses. In the graduate program, she teaches didactic and online components of education and graduate nursing core role courses. She also provides mentorship support to clinical courses for graduate nursing education students. In the undergraduate program, she teaches face to face and online courses for RN-BSN and Second Degree BSN students for the University of Houston-Downtown. What’s more, she continuously updates her material for lectures based on current research in the area, student feedback, and peer review. 

Her education role research areas incorporate her interests in precepted clinical experiences, accelerated programs, critical thinking, and problem-based learning. She has designed several innovative RN to BSN accelerated and traditional BSN programs incorporating technology into clinical education. 

In regards to her educational background, Linda earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the State University of New York in 1984, followed by her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Texas Woman’s University in 1989. She then went on to attain her Doctor of Philosophy degree from Texas Woman’s University in 2002. She holds certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Life Support. She is also a Certified Critical Registered Nurse and a Certified Emergency Nurse. 

Attributing her success to not being afraid to pursue another step, Linda is a nurse entrepreneur. A nurse entrepreneur is a nurse who uses their training, knowledge, and medical expertise as a nurse to create and develop their own businesses within the healthcare field through the use of creativity, business systems, problem solving, and successful investing strategies. 

In order to stay up to date in her field, Linda is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the American Nurses Association, and the Texas Nurses Association. She has received several awards throughout her extensive career, including Teacher of the Year Award by the Houston West Chamber of Commerce in 2010, Excellence in Nursing Education Bronze Award by Good Samaritan Foundation in 2009, and Gloria Mackey Excellence in Education Award by the American Association of Critical Care Nursing-Houston Gulf Coast Chapter in 2005. 

A registered nurse is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to their primary role of treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, as well as assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up. 

On a more personal note, Linda has a farm with 9 cattle and enjoys raising a specialty breed of chicken. Her hobbies include sewing and CrossFit training.
