Get to know Rheumatologist Dr. M. Anthony Albornoz, who serves patients in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Albornoz has over three decades of experience as a clinical and academic rheumatologist, with special expertise in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and fibromyalgia. He is the Owner of Rheumatology Medical Specialists, PC with locations in Media and Darby, Pennsylvania.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Medical Sciences, Costa Rica in 1984. Upon relocating to the United States, he went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in 1987, followed by his fellowship in rheumatology at Temple University Hospital in 1989. 

In regards to the doctor’s professional background, he served as the Program Director of the Internal Residency Program at Mercy Catholic Medical Center. In this role, the 60-Person Internal Residency Program increased the American Board of Internal Medicine’s rolling 3-year board passage rate from 37 % in 1996 to 97% in 2002, tying for 1st place with Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. 

In addition to having won multiple teaching and attending physician awards, Dr. Albornoz has made 36 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and serves as the principal and co-investigator in multiple ongoing research studies. He is the Co-Creator of 1st Allopathic-Osteopathic Internal Medicine Residency Program on the East Coast, a past Editor of the American College of Rheumatology News, as well as a past member of the American College of Rheumatology Marketing and Communications Committee.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, Dr. Albornoz is board-certified in both internal medicine and rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Among his various achievements, he was named a Top Doctor in Rheumatology by Mainline News Philadelphia in 2016, was the Co-Winner of the National Clinical Sciences Award at the 72nd Annual Meeting of the American College of Physicians, as well as won an Outstanding Internal Medicine Resident of the Year Award.

Rheumatologists treat arthritis, autoimmune diseases, pain disorders affecting joints, and osteoporosis.
