Get to know Pediatric Hospitalist Dr. Mahesh Sharman, who serves patients in Flint, Michigan.

An energetic physician known for his professionalism, teaching techniques, and calm demeanor in hectic times, Dr. Sharman is the Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Hurley Medical Center. He specializes in pediatric critical care, pediatric palliative medicine, and hospital medicine.

Since its founding in 1908, Hurley Medical Center has devoted itself to bringing innovative, leading-edge technology and medical services to Flint and Genesee County. From its expertly trained physicians and nurses to its highly innovative technology and state-of-the art facilities, it is widely recognized as a medical center of exceptional excellence.

Alongside his clinical role, he is an Associate Professor and Lead Clerkship Director within the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

An Indian native, Dr. Sharman earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the Jiwaji University Government Science College in Gwalior, India. He completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Doctor of Medicine degrees at the Gajar Raja Medical College, and his residency in pediatrics at the JA Group of Hospitals. He then went on to complete the Heinz Fellowship in neonatology at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton, England.

After relocating to the United States, he completed his residency in pediatrics at Hurley Medical Center, and his fellowship in critical care medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

Holding Quadruple certifications, the doctor is board-certified in pediatrics, pediatric critical care medicine, pediatric hospital medicine, and hospice and palliative medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP), Dr. Sharman holds membership status with the Genesee County Medical Society, the Michigan State Medical Society, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has been a question-writer for pediatric critical medicine board exams, as well as for the board exams for the American Board of Pediatrics. He has also authored protocols for sedation, conducted multiple grand rounds, conducted board reviews for pediatric residents, and co-authored and presented multiple research papers and presentations. 

Furthermore, he has conducted several evidence-based reviews, authored book chapters, and mentored many residents and students through research and quality-improvement processes.

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends individuals be under pediatric care up to the age of 21. Pediatric hospitalists are pediatricians who work primarily in hospitals. They care for children in many hospital areas, including the pediatric ward, labor and delivery, the newborn nursery, the emergency department, the neonatal intensive care unit, and the pediatric intensive care unit

An authority in his field, Dr. Sharman has been the recipient of the 2002 Children’s Champion Award, Excellence in Teaching Award by College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University in 2000, The Tauscher Award in 1999, Clinical Excellence Award (Top Performance) in 1998, and Advances in Patient Care Award in 1996.
