Get to know Surgical Oncologist Dr. Maria J. Kowzun, who serves patients in New Jersey.

Recognized as a caring and compassionate surgical oncologist specializing in breast surgery, Dr. Kowzun is an attending physician at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, and serves as the Director of the Center for Breast Health and Disease Management at Clara Maass Medical Center. She is also an Assistant Professor of Surgery within the Division of Surgical Oncology and Section of Breast Surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. She currently sees patients at both Rutgers CINJ in New Brunswick and Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville, NJ.

“As a breast cancer surgeon and specialist at New Jersey’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, I hope to provide the best possible breast care experience for our patients. I work closely with a strong multidisciplinary team of experts to help prevent, diagnose, and treat the various stages of breast cancer, ranging from early screen-detected cancers to metastatic disease, with access to the latest clinical trials. I also manage the spectrum of breast pathology for individuals with both benign and high-risk breast lesions. My ultimate goal is to offer my patients the best quality of care according to the most recent practice recommendations and surgical techniques with a caring and compassionate smile” expressed the doctor.

Pertaining to her educational pursuits, her desire to work in the medical field to impact lives occurred at an early age after multiple reconstructive plastic surgeries to restore facial symmetry for nerve damage due to a cystic hygroma resection at birth. She received her undergraduate degree from Yale University and her medical degree from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii. 

Subsequently, Dr. Kowzun completed her internship with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard University and her residency at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark. She also participated in a two-year plastic surgery research fellowship with the Institute for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at New York University. Following the completion of her fellowship in breast surgical oncology at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey funded by the Breast Cancer Alliance and CR Bard, she joined the faculty as a breast surgeon.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), she is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, Dr. Kowzun is an active member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Association of Women Surgeons, and the Society of Surgical Oncology. She also has an interest in research involving high-risk individuals with genetic predispositions to breast cancer, as well as global health issues through prior involvement with international medical missions in places such as Haiti, Thailand, South Africa, Fiji, and the Philippines.
