Marilyn Marx, MD, MBA, FACS, General Surgeon

Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Marilyn Marx, who serves patients in Galveston, Texas.

Dr. Marx is a board-certified general surgeon with a special interest in laparoscopic surgery, diseases of the breast, hernias, and endoscopy. She has a 30+ year successful career in both private and academic surgical practice. 

In her current role as Professor of Surgery at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Dr. Marx’s surgical practice is primarily focused on taking care of the Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) patient population.

Before embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Marx obtained her medical degree from Rush Medical College in 1980. She completed her general surgical residency at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, furthering her education by receiving a Master of Medical Science degree from the same educational venue in 1987.

Upon completing her residency, she was in private practice until 1997 when she joined the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She is actively involved in educating surgical residents, medical students, and physician assistant students. In addition to her clinical responsibilities as Professor of Surgery, she has previously served in the School of Medicine in several administrative appointments, including Senior Associate Dean for the Faculty practice, Chief Physician Executive, Chief Medical Director for Outpatient Services, and Assistant Dean for Faculty Practice. In addition, Dr. Marx served for many years for the Hospital System as a Medical Director for Care Management and Physician Advisor.

In August of 2000, Dr. Marx graduated with honors from the University of Houston Clear-Lake with a Master of Business Administration degree and was voted “Outstanding Student of the Year” by the business school faculty.

As a testament to her success, she is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery, an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is a member of the Association for Academic Surgery and the Texas Surgical Society. Dr. Marx served as President of the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) from 2010-2011, having been involved with the organization for many years serving multiple years on the AWS Council in various roles. In addition, she has served on councils and committees of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for many years.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care. 

On a more personal note, Dr. Marx is the mother of two children.
