A seasoned general surgeon, Dr. Ravden is now retired from active surgical practice, focusing on wound care and surgical assistance in the operating room and clinic.
Throughout his professional 50+ years of experience, he served as an Associate Surgeon at Advantage Wound Care in San Diego, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Diego (1992 – 2002), and as an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Diego (2002 – 2016).
Having grown up in a medical family in Cape Town, South Africa, Dr. Ravden observed his father, a primary care physician, taking care of his patients. Inspired to follow in his footsteps, he attended medical school at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cape Town. When his parents immigrated to London, England in the early 70’s, he began his postgraduate surgical education there.
In 1975, he and his wife came to the United States, where he completed his surgical training at Sinai Hospital and Bridgeport Hospital. They moved from the East Coast to San Diego in 1991, where he joined Kaiser Permanente as a general surgeon.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (FRCS), the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.
On a more personal note, Dr. Ravden enjoys walking, cycling, going to the gym, and watercolor painting.
