Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Matthew C. Morrey, who serves patients in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Morrey is a skilled and experienced board-certified orthopaedic surgeon whose surgical interests include total hip replacement, revision total hip replacement, modular dual mobility bearing surfaces, total knee replacement, revision total knee replacement, partial (uni) knee replacement, robotic surgery, and outpatient total joint replacement. He is the Founder of Ortho San Antonio, which is an orthopaedic specialty group with a goal to enhance the quality and outcomes of adult hip and knee surgery.

Professionally, Dr. Morrey can also be found on staff at CHRISTUS Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in San Antonio. He is committed to matching the treatment and procedure to each patient’s specific needs. In addition to direct anterior total hip arthroplasty and primary knee replacement surgery, he performs complex reconstructions and revision surgery.

“The physician/patient relationship is one that is established upon the first encounter with a patient. That is why I feel it is important to spend time with each patient during their initial visit. This not only allows me to get to know them but also allows me to educate them on what their particular condition is and what the treatment options are available to them. In doing so, it allows for a shared treatment decision between myself and my patients. In my practice, which is almost exclusively total hip and total knee replacement surgery, this is paramount as treatment plans may be as simple as activity modification, anti-inflammatory medications, and other conservative modalities versus surgical intervention. Ultimately, these do end up being shared decisions between the physicians and patient, allowing the patient to not only understand their condition and treatment plan but also to have a say in the treatment of their hip or knee condition.” as stated by the doctor.

Originally from Galveston, Dr. Morrey was transplanted to Minnesota at an early age. He completed his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree at St. John’s University in Collegeville, followed by his Master’s degree in Medical Illustration from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He then worked as a professional medical illustrator for three years prior to returning to medical school. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and returned to Minnesota where he completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery with an emphasis on primary and revision adult reconstruction of the hip and knee at the Mayo Clinic.

In 2014, he became the program director for the UTHSCSA hip and knee reconstructive surgery fellowship. In October of 2014, he was one of two U.S. surgeons selected to participate in the John Insall traveling fellowship for knee replacement surgery. During his training, he contributed multiple medical illustrations for a number of authors, and was a co-editor and illustrator of the Master’s Technique in Orthopaedic Series ‘Relevant Surgical Exposures’.

To this day, he continues to author book chapters and has been the section editor in a major textbook on hip and knee reconstruction. In addition to being active in clinical research, he is interested in resident education and innovative methods of continuing education that utilize his medical illustration background.

Among his various achievements, the doctor is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons. Moreover, he is a member of several professional organizations, including the Texas Medical Association, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, and the Texas Orthopaedic Association.

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. They work in clinical and hospital settings.
