Maureen R. Morrison, PsyD, a Psychologist in Private Practice

Get to know Psychologist Dr. Maureen R. Morrison, who serves patients in Wichita, Kansas.

A seasoned psychologist, Dr. Morrison works with patients at her private practice in Wichita, Kansas. Part of my inherent design is a powerful curiosity to try to make sense of the world – especially fellow human travelers. She thoroughly enjoys helping others explore their unique design. If they meet the criteria for Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), she provides them with resources and educational material about their design. They also explore creating a life that welcomes their HSP traits and enhances their ability to nourish themselves.

Growing up in a rural area in upstate Western New York State, she was the first to go to college in her family and started to get a hunger for traveling and exploring the wider world in her early teens. When she was 16, she was an exchange student for a year in Antwerp, Belgium, where she had to learn French and Flemish, simultaneously.

In regards to her educational background, Dr. Morrison received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, including a sophomore semester in India. She was very fortunate to have a wise mentor/professor/advisor who helped her pull together the pieces of her story and encouraged her to apply to graduate programs in psychology.

Her next chapter led her from the rolling hills of Western New York and Pennsylvania to the hot, dusty flatness of Waco, Texas. She chose to specialize in clinical psychology at Baylor University, which offered stellar classroom training, as well as 3,000 hours of practicum experience in psychiatric hospitals, a juvenile probation department where she completed psych testing, and an outpatient rehab program helping people rebuild their lives after catastrophic injuries.

Subsequently, Dr. Morrison completed her APA-approved clinical internship and two years of postdoctoral work at Wichita State University Counseling Center and UKSM-Wichita Medical School, where she specialized in the treatment of eating disorders. She opened her private practice in 1991 after working for four years as a staff psychologist at a private psychiatric hospital.

Psychology is the science of behavior and mind. It includes the study of conscious and unconscious phenomena, as well as feeling and thought. It is an academic discipline of immense scope. Psychologists assess, diagnose, and treat the psychological problems and behavioral dysfunctions resulting from, or related to, physical and mental health. In addition, they play a major role in the promotion of healthy behavior, preventing diseases and improving patients’ quality of life.

On a more personal note, Dr. Morrison attributes her success to connecting very easily with her patients and being able to provide concrete help for them. She met her husband of 34 years while in graduate school at Baylor, and he currently works as a clinical psychologist at the VA in Wichita. Their daughter is married to a great guy, and they live in Kansas City. In her free time, she enjoys reading, interior design, time with friends, and volunteer work.
