Get to know Nurse Melinda Hickey, who serves patients in the Peoria, Illinois region.

Melinda is a Certified Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, and a Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse. She is currently working as a Regional Wound Ostomy Coordinator for Carle Health Methodist, Carle Health Proctor and Carle Health Pekin Hospital.

Her areas of expertise include adult-geriatric population providing care in surgical closures, management and treatment of various wound etiologies. She also works with ostomates helping them learn to manage new and established urinary/fecal diversions. 

With extensive clinical and leadership experience, she has proven that she has the ability to provide patient care with safety, efficiency, and empathy at the center of the nursing decision-making process in accordance with hospitals’ guidelines and regulations that are consistent with the Electronic Medical Record profession’s mission, vision, values, and culture. 

She is an effective communicator who is able to engage patients and their families as needed during times of crises while maintaining a positive and constructive relationship with staff members. She is also adept at handling emergency situations in a professional manner, even in challenging circumstances.

With an impressive educational background, Melinda most recently completed her Masters of Science with an emphasis in Adult-Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner from Purdue Global University (2022). She earned her bachelor’s of nursing degree from Methodist College of Nursing (2006). In 2009 she completed her Wound/Ostomy Certification through Metropolitan State University. Continuously advancing her efforts, she remains a proud member of the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society.

Gerontology is the study of the social, cultural, psychological, cognitive, and biological aspects of aging. A Certified Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP-C) is a nurse practitioner who specializes in continuing and comprehensive healthcare for adults across the lifespan from adolescence to older aging adults.

An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is a nurse who has obtained at least a master’s degree in nursing. APRNs may work across various healthcare settings, including hospitals, ambulatory clinics or long-term care facilities. They provide medical support and preventative care to patients, along with additional responsibilities of coordinating patient care and using specialized knowledge to manage complex patient conditions. APRNs can diagnose and treat as well as order and interpret tests and prescribe medications.

A Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON) is a registered nurse who has additional education and training in how to care for people who have a wound, an ostomy (an opening made by surgery, from an area inside the body to the outside), or problems with continence (ability to control the flow of urine or the passage of stool). Also called WOC nurse.
