Get to know Physiatrist Dr. Melvin R. Manning, who serves patients in Texas.

Dr. Manning, a highly trained physiatrist, has been a Partner at Texas Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Group since 2000. He has devoted his career towards serving the special needs of athletes’ back pain, returning them to function in a quick and safe manner. 

Using the strategies of physical medicine and rehabilitation, he combines special skills necessary to diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate injuries with/without surgery. He has developed a particular interest in strength, endurance, and balance training which are used to reduce injury risk. In addition to delivering comprehensive sports care, Dr. Manning provides care for patients who require interventional spine procedures. He has extensive experience in cervical, thoracic, lumbar epidural, and facet block procedures. He has additional training in intradiscal electrothermal procedures and nucleoplasty.

Passionate in his efforts of assisting patients with the natural healing aids of regenerative medicine, Dr. Manning has found that nonsurgical treatments of stem cell and PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections have successfully improved quality of life in the setting of chronic neck and low back pain. His athletes have used orthobiologic care to improve activities of daily living and performance.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Manning graduated with his medical degree from the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine. He then went on to perform his internship at Kaiser Permanente Hospital, his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and his fellowship at Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine.

With a focus on low back pain and spinal injections, he is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR) The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This is accomplished through a process of certification and maintenance of certification that fosters excellence and encourages continuous learning.

Having worked in both private and academic settings, Dr. Manning understands how to deliver sports care in today’s market with an emphasis on quality professional care. He has experience in providing sports medicine care to world class and elite athletes. He was an assistant team physician with the Dallas Mavericks from 2002-2015 and a member of the NBA Team Physicians Association. He formerly served as the team physician for FC Dallas, previously known as Dallas Burn, and is a physical medicine and rehab consultant for Southern Methodist University Student Health Service.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, he is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the Dallas County Medical Society, the International Spinal Injection Society, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Fellow), the North American Spine Society, the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports and Occupational Rehabilitation, the Professional Team Physicians Association, Strathmore’s Who’s Who Texas Medical Association, the Theraband Research Advisory Committee, and the United States Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Society.

Throughout his extensive 30+ year career, Dr. Manning has provided expert sports medicine advice and opinions to a variety of media. Television interview subjects with ABC, NBC and Fox have included steroid use in sports and compression shorts in professional basketball players. He has been a guest speaker with ESPN radio and is a consultant for a number of sports medicine journalists.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, also known as physiatry and physiatrics, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. Physiatrists treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. 

On a more personal note, Dr. Manning is a four time Ironman triathlon finisher (Florida, Lake Placid, Brazil, and Arizona). He has also qualified and competed in the Boston marathon. He clearly understands the physical and mental demands of training and competing. His passion for sports, fitness and nutrition ultimately provides patients with advice and plan of action toward an active/healthy lifestyle.
